Hi Tucker! Thanks so much for posting. I agree the language of terms such as MSM is not common parlance but rather more medicalized, preferred by public health professionals over the people it is intending to describe.

I am also a queer activist and this is something I also struggle with. The reason it is so removed from the language we would normally use is because of men who don't identify as gay, queer, or bi and still have sex with men. But then that leaves me with the question -- if you are on the download, are you really going to use this app anyway?

Sex between men / sex between women seems like a possibility. Also "if your partner is a man" or "if your partner is a woman" -- though it doesn't necessarily include folks who are intersex or transgender or gender non-conforming in this situation. And people of all gender identities and sexualities deserve comprehensive, non-judgmental sexual health information. This project will probably not end when I turn it in as my thesis come May 9th, I think that it is an opportunity to continue to think about language and accessibility as well as numerous other issues such as technology and privilege.

Thank you again so much for your feedback and I am open to any/all feedback to make this project as comprehensive and accessible as possible so if you have any additional feedback, I am all ears. Thanks!

Hi SJ. Not quite sure how I stumbled across your blog, but here I am. Great work–your iPhone sexual health app. One question/concern concerning the use of 'men who have sex with men' in an app that is presumably for the general population. I understand you wanted to create an inclusive category based on activity and not identity, and I understand the traps of using works like gay (I work with MSM). Nonetheless, MSM is a term created by health professionals to use in epidemiological reports, and its a way for us to refer to a broad population (that only exists as an intellectual concept) without dealing with sexual identity. And although MSM is a category that is supposed to refer to a population based on sexual activity and not identity, it is a word that refers to a population and not activity. MSM was never adopted by any large number of men as an identity (very few men answer a question about their sexual identity (or even activity) with 'oh, I'm a man who has sex with men'). This of course puts us sexual health promoters and prevention specialists in a bind. I have no problem with the use of MSM as a epidemiological category, and I use it regularly in scholarly writing and grant applications, but its not something that I would use in prevention materials or in conversations with the men. As a queer activist I wouldn't want anyone to start identifying with categories chosen for us by doctors. If I wanted to be activity specific, I would probably use terminology like "taking it up the ass", "deep throating" or "fucking without a condom/barebacking". But I get why you can't list all of those things on the screen. I would probably put gay/bi/queer men before MSM because I'm not convinced that a man who has sex with a man but does not have an identity that reflects his homosexual activity wouldn't clik on gay but would like on MSM. Here is an idea, what about "sex between men" and "sex between women"? That might be a way to have to general categories and avoid having to prioritize, or avoid altogether, a sexual identity.

Hello,
my name is Marily Konstantinopoulou and I am a photography student at the International Center of Photography in Manhattan. I am currently working on fine art project on female escorts in NYC and I would like to know if you would be interested in assigning me portraits of the people who are participating in the Sex Work Zine Project.

My future purpose is to document the life of courtesans who feel integrated into a society that demands their services. However, I am not interested in treating women as subject matters but in creating my personal language on sex work and if possible communicate it visually through my pictures.
By all means the pictures will be released only after your approval and written consent.
I will definitely use the appropriate measures to protect each woman’s identity and confidentiality, as she sees necessary.

I will be glad to offer the fine prints for the pictures taken that you could use for your projects.
Feel free to contact me for any further details: marily.konstan@gmail.com

[...] The PROS Network Services Finder App is one such app, created by Sarah Jenny during her stay at the ITP at NYU. Last month we had the pleasure of speaking with Sarah about her project and we discussed future applications of mobile technology in and around Tompkins Square Park. The Service Finder app is a easy to use mobile site that: Provides a listing of services for sex workers and related populations (injecting drug users, homeless youth, trafficking victims, and/or those profiled by police as sex workers) based on GPS location information in New York City. Services are categories under harm reduction and syringe exchanges, shelters, legal services, youth services, and advocacy and support services. [...]
